Did you know that we don’t have a personal photographer that is traveling with us? But we are taking most of our couple photos by ourselves? And I promise you, it’s easier than you think!
In this post, I will share with you all our tips and tricks to take great couple photos while you travel! And help you to keep magical memories from your travels!
Take great couple photos while you travel
Invest in a good camera / good lens
We have recently invested in a Sony Alpha 7III. I know this camera is quite expensive but it is a really nice investment. Before we had a Sony Alpha 7II and we loved it. We changed our camera because we wanted to do more videos and the Sony alpha 7III has the 4K and has a follow focus which is really nice. Also, the Sony a7 III is a supremely capable full-frame camera. Though it doesn’t have the most megapixels or shoot the fastest bursts, its well-judged mix of resolution, speed, features and price point make it an easy recommendation for all kinds of photographers and all kinds of photography.
If you are just starting learning photography or you don’t want to take professional photos, you don’t need a camera like this. We started with a Canon 650D. We bought this camera when we started traveling just to take good memories of our travels. Then, we started to learn photography in a more professional way. This kind of camera is really nice when you are just starting photography and you don’t want to invest a lot in a camera.

Buy a tripod
Ok, this is the first advice that I will give you: you should invest in a tripod. Almost every photo of us 2 has been taken with a tripod. That allows us to set up our tripod and our camera exactly where and how we want to take the photos.
Usually, we wake up early to have the spots to ourselves and the best light to take good photos. So, we can set up our tripod and camera and take our photos with nobody around.
Also, using a tripod will make you sure to have the final photo exactly as you wanted it! 😉 If you have already asked someone to take your photo, you know that even if they are really kind… Sometimes it’s not exactly what you wanted!
We have a basic tripod from Amazon basics which is not expensive and is really nice. It is very light and easy to transport during our travels. It is perfect to take couple photos.

Use the self-timer function of your camera
Single shot
Nowadays, most cameras have a self-timer function. It is really useful for setting up the camera from where you want to take the photo and then, and go together where you want to be in the photo. Usually, you have a few seconds: 5 or 10 seconds. But it is enough if you run! Or you can also set up everything and ask someone to click on the button.
Multiple shots
Most of the time, we set up our camera on a single shot and 10 seconds. But you can also choose to take multiples shots, which is very useful to take photos in action: diving in the pool, making different poses.
Connect your camera to your phone or a wireless remote control

Plus, you also have the option to connect your phone to your camera. As we have a Sony Alpha, we can easily connect our camera to our phone through a mobile app. It is called “Imaging Edge mobile”. But you should also have one on other cameras. You can take photos directly from your phone. It is really nice, the only problem is that you have to hide the phone in your photo.
Buy a wireless remote control
Also, if you can’t connect your phone to your camera, you have the option to invest in a wireless remote control. We know that it can be really exhausting to run from the camera and back in 10 seconds. Especially if you are taking many shots until to have the good one and if you want to take photos far away. A wireless remote control can be the right solution for you!
Ask someone to take your photo
Ok, we almost never do this, first of all, because when you wake up at 5:00 to have a spot all to yourselves, there is nobody else! haha and the second reason is that it is almost impossible to explain precisely to someone how you want the photo to be taken. There are too many factors: frame, horizon, distance and so on. If you are doing this, unfortunately, you will often be disappointed by the final result.
Of course, if you are traveling with friends or family, you can ask them! That can be easier!
Take photos with a drone
When you have nobody to take your couple photos and you want to take landscape photos, using a drone can be the right solution! Also, it will allow you to take photos from above. It can be great for being creative and capturing the landscape under another angle! The only problem is that you can not take photos of you 2 in the water!
We have a DJI Mavic pro for taking all our photos and videos from above. These two photos taken in Tuscany this summer with our drone. The Dji Mavic 2 (Pro or Zoom) is a very capable drone for real estate photography. With the added benefit of being compact, quiet and easy to travel with, it also provides very good video & photo capabilities, similar to the Phantom 4. DJI added an upgraded Panorama mode in the DJI GO4 app, allowing to shoot full 360 panoramas: Stitching is done in the drone’s cpu, the sky part of the panorama above the drone, is filled automatically with a “fake sky”. You get a 8K 360 equilateral jpeg, ready to be imported in Nodalview.

Set up a good composition and be creative!
Most of the time, we are first trying to choose a good composition for our photo. Try different angles, go further, closer, we try to go down, or at the opposite, climb something to be higher and so on. Don’t be afraid to try different perspectives until you have found the frame you like the most! Be creative and try to take unique photos that really reflect the moment you are spending with your loved one!
Then, after this step, we set up the camera with one of us in the frame to finish finding the right place to stand in the photo! But also to do the focus: make you focus on you and not on the landscape! Especially if you have set up your camera to have a blurred back because if you don’t focus on you, you will probably be blurred.
Edit your photos with good lightroom presets!
One of the most important steps is the post-production of your photos. It means that when you take photos in RAW, they are neutral. It’s up to you to color the photo as you like it and as you think the place on the photo looked like!

It is really easy, you just have to upload the free Lightroom mobile app on your phone. And then, apply our presets on your photo in one click!
